De Wikke is more than a field where organic vegetables are grown. The employment project De Wikke is mainly about people, people with their own story. Vegetables are the common thread throughout this story.
De Wikke is a place where people are central. Our social horticulture project is part of custom made work organization Wonen en Werken and offers work and guidance to about 20 employees, workers on permanent contracts and volunteers in the employment care project. De Wikke is all about inclusion and participation: everyone contributes to farm life in their own way.
Our employees are involved in all aspects of production, from planting and harvesting to weighing and delivering vegetables. By working together, we create an environment of appreciation, friendship and personal growth. At De Wikke, we give vulnerable people the opportunity to do meaningful work and be part of a community. At De Wikke, we believe in the power of local produce. We grow our vegetables with care and passion in Herent and Heverlee, keeping food miles to a minimum. This results in super fresh produce with a lower ecological footprint.
To diversify our offerings and provide our customers with a wide range of products throughout the year, we also purchase fruits and vegetables from other organic certified growers. These growers are located in Belgium, Europe and, to a limited extent, the Southern Hemisphere. We choose them carefully to ensure that journeys are as short as possible while keeping quality high. At De Wikke, we offer products grown or produced with respect for people and the environment. In this way, we support the local community and sustainable agriculture worldwide.
